AIOps

Artificial Intelligence for IT Operations

AIOps (Artificial Intelligence for IT Operations) is the application of machine learning algorithms and statistical analysis to operational data: performance metrics, application logs, infrastructure events. The goal is to reduce alert noise and surface anomalous patterns that a human operator would struggle to identify manually across high data volumes.

How it works #

An AIOps platform ingests continuous data streams — CPU metrics, query time, error rates, structured logs — and applies anomaly detection models, typically based on clustering, time series analysis, or neural networks, to identify deviations from the baseline. When two anomalies overlap in time, the system correlates them and presents them as a single aggregated event.

The result is an enriched alert: instead of receiving fifty separate notifications, the team gets a single incident with correlated signals and a shared time window.

Operational limits #

Temporal correlation is not causality. AIOps can flag that a latency spike on Oracle coincides with increased storage I/O, but it does not automatically determine which is the cause and which is the effect — nor does it identify the upstream root cause (e.g., an unoptimized query, lock contention, or a runaway nightly batch).

In a complex incident, reconstructing the causal chain still requires a DBA or an engineer with application context. AIOps reduces triage time; it does not eliminate it.
